Give the Gift That Lasts a Lifetime

Leave a Legacy
The holiday season is upon us and although it is easy to get caught up in the hustle and bustle, it’s important to reflect on the true meaning of the giving season.

A couple of years ago, about this time of year, my family lost its matriarch, my grandmother. Losing a family member during the holidays caused indescribable pain and grief. Together, my family cried, laughed over fond memories and we grieved this loss together.

We recognized that the emotional wounds would heal but the financial burden on my parents, aunts and uncles weighed heavy. The loss of my grandmother came quick and was unexpected. She was only 74 but breast cancer does not discriminate. She quickly progressed to Stage IV and there was little the doctors could do.

How would the family afford to settle her estate and provide her with the funeral she deserved?

I remember heading over to my grandmother’s home with my mom. Although it was an emotional experience, I could still feel the warmth the house provided for 22 years.

A small safe in the back room contained my grandparent’s legal and financial documents. As my mom combed through the paperwork, looking for the documents her attorney requested, she came across a folder marked Insurance.

Turns out, my grandma had purchase a whole life insurance policy, PFP | The Family Security Plan®, after my grandfather passed away, just one year earlier. I can remember my mother calling the phone number on the policy and speaking to a PFP | The Family Security Plan representative. She informed the representative of my grandmother’s passing and, unbeknownst to us, the policy had a twenty thousand dollar death benefit.

My family could breathe a sigh of relief and my grandmother’s funeral was as beautiful as she was. The death benefit provided by PFP | The Family Security Plan® covered all of the costs and our family was able to mourn her death and celebrate her life without financial worry.

Three years after my grandmother’s passing, another family event was taking place – I was getting married! I was caught up in wedding planning, choosing flowers, tasting cakes and trying on wedding gowns.

After a trip into New York City, I found the dress of my dreams. As I went to discuss finances with the representative, my mom stopped me. “Gram is buying your dress for you.”

Of course I was confused at first; however, my family explained that my grandmother included in her will, that a portion of the funds left over from her whole life insurance policy, would be used to purchase my wedding dress.

I was overwhelmed with emotion but it was not just about the money.  I had always envisioned my grandmother at my wedding. Now a part of her would be.

My Gram surrounded me as I walked down the aisle on my big day. The gift she gave, and the memories that came with it, will never be forgotten.
