My father worked hard his entire life to provide for his family. While my mother stayed home with my sister and me, my father would leave before we woke up and was home in time for dinner, five or six days a week. We never thought much about what would happen if he couldn’t work.

In August, my parents learned about Disability Insurance, which would protect my father’s income, should something happen that left him unable to work. Together, my parents decided to purchase a policy. Four months later, on an icy night in December, they were glad they did.

It was about 8:00 in the evening when my mother noticed the heat wasn’t working. Within an hour, an oil truck was parked outside our house, ready to make a delivery. My father led the technician around to the meter, trudging through the snow and ice. As they bent down to read the meter, my father slipped and landed hard on his shoulder. Two hours later, the doctor in the emergency room had repaired his fully dislocated shoulder and sent him home. Little did we know, this was only the beginning of a long recovery.

Since his accident had happened at home, he didn’t qualify for Worker’s Compensation Benefits and he had a limited number of sick days. In the six months following my dad’s fall, the Disability Insurance they had purchased was a lifesaver. The policy provided them with enough money to cover their daily expenses without having to dip into their savings.

Without Disability Insurance, my father would have spent his days worrying about paying the bills. Thanks to his policy, he was able to fully focus on his recovery.
